BASIC INTRODUCTION TO LINO-CUT PRINTING WORKSHOP

This Introduction to lino-cut printing workshop is aimed at students wishing to explore basic printing techniques on fabric and fibre (paper) surfaces. Students will be given a brief overview of how to draw and carve a surface design and will get to test a variety of tools and materials including soft and hard carving blocks, cutting tools, inks, paints, brayers and barens.

Basic reduction linocut techniques will be introduced for those wishing to achieve multiple colours in a single print while only using one block. In addition other printing methods such as as monotype printing using gel-plates relief and rub marking will be briefly demonstrated.

A design is cut, carved or gouged into a sheet of linoleum, and this stamp is then inked and pressed onto the fabric, creating repeating patterns. The Introduction to lino-cut printing class will cover designing and drawing your image, how to transfer it to a ‘ezi-carve lino block, and the best methods for proper carving to make a long-lasting and reusable stamp. You will gain a brief overview of traditional repeat patterns and how to print a large area with just one stamp. Your design could be a logo, pattern, words or a hand drawing. You’ll get to take your new stamp and prints home to keep honing your lino-cut printing skills.

Students will be encouraged and supported to create printed pieces to their liking that can be included in their everyday textile art works or projects. They will be guided to explore and test ideas whilst making a colourful mess and having fun. Please wear comfortable shoes as this is a day that requires a lot of standing and wear suitable clothing for painting. This workshop is an informal and relaxed environment and students are encouraged to work at their own pace. It is ideally suited for those wishing to work alongside others and have advice and support readily available.

TEXTILE ART CLASS

In this  Textile Art Class, I will treat you as both stitching enthusiasts and artists for the day and take you through a range of appliqué and stitching techniques to help build your knowledge, skills and confidence to create an artwork using textiles and threads as your palette.

You will explore shading, dimension and composition. Each class offers something new, including mini tutorials on how to include mixed media and machine stitched elements into your work. As each artwork comes to completion, participants will be guided on how to prepare work for display (framing or hanging) and for dedicated art students ways to present your work for study assignments and/or enter into art exhibitions.

My style of teaching is inclusive and easy going and students are encouraged to work at their own pace. The word ‘perfect’ is gently placed aside whilst the artistic process is in progress and  “the more flaws the better, the more interesting the piece becomes. I have six golden rules I abide by: “nothing is right or wrong; no unpicking; mix warm and cool, dark and light colours; bring bold and delicate prints together; respect the marks you make with stitch;  and believe in yourself!”

Come and have a day of artistic enjoyment. There are layers of learning to stimulate the mind and you will experience satisfaction in completing your very own textile artwork. Individuals who have participated in one or more of my classes are amazed with how each piece naturally evolves and how ‘in tune’ they become to the process, and what the fabrics, colours and textures are telling them!
